KOLKATA: Calcutta high court on Thursday cancelled Madan Mitra’s bail and asked him to surrender. Mitra is an accused in Saradha scam and was arrested by CBI in December, 2014. He had got bail from a Alipore court on October 31.

Bengal’s ex-transport minister Madan Mitra’s resignation was accepted by the chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday.

The CBI challenged the bail of Mitra and had been pleading in the high court for Mitra’s bail cancellation as he is an influential person and could influence witnesses.

For that to get rid of the influential tag, Mitra resigned from the post of the transport minister and Mamata Banerjee after accepting his resignation forwarded it to the Governor.

However, the bench of Justice Nishita Mhatre directed Mitra to surrender on Thursday, after cancelling his bail. Even the court did not allow to continue Mitra on house arrest, as earlier a high court had asked.

Following the court order Mitra left his home for surrendering before the Alipore court. Mitra said: I want to honour the order of the high court, as I am a law abiding citizen and have faith on Indian judiciary.

On the other hand the Alipore court had been directed to get ready if the ex-minister is sent to jail, as earlier too remanded in Alipore jail. Though he was in jail for a short span and was in hospital from February to October.

Mitra is waiting at the Alipore court as the court officials are yet to get the copy of the high court order. Because without the formal order of the high court, Mitra cannot surrender.
